Meet Jesus

In May 2024, on screening day, our team met a quiet four-year-old named Jesus at Ribera Medical Center in Ajijic, Mexico. He clung to his mother’s hand, his eyes down as families gathered for cleft surgeries. Days later, Mayo Clinic surgeon Dr. Uldis Bite repaired Jesus’s cleft lip—a procedure that began to change far more than his appearance. His spirit started to bloom.

In the recovery room, his mother shared a simple, powerful truth: “I still cry tears of joy when I see my little Jesus so happy.”

Months later, his confidence took root. Jesus stepped into kindergarten with his head held high, and friendships followed. By first grade, he crossed the stage as classmates cheered—proof that a new smile can open doors to belonging.

In April 2025, Jesus returned to Ribera for the next step: a cleft palate repair by Dr. Gibreel of the Mayo Clinic. With this surgery behind him, he’s working through common challenges—speech, feeding, and breathing—with the same courage he’s shown from the start. We will continue to stand by him and his family as he grows.

Along the way, compassion met purpose. During our 2025 campaign, newly retired Floridian Robert DifFore traveled to Ajijic “in search of purpose.” He found it in Jesus, and generously sponsored a surgery that will shape the arc of this little boy’s life.

We’ve seen unforgettable moments of welcome in Ajijic. After Jesus’s first operation, families formed a circle, chanting his name; a toddler patient toddled over and wrapped him in a hug. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room. Hope—shared and seen—became the loudest voice.

Stories like Jesus’s are possible because partners, volunteers, and local supporters unite—Ribera Medical Center, Mayo Clinic teams, donors, and the Ajijic community—turning skilled care into lasting change. After our successful May 2024 mission (28 cleft procedures), we returned aiming to provide 40 more life-changing surgeries. Together, we’re opening futures that once felt out of reach.

Today, Jesus laughs, runs, plays, dances, and gets birthday party invites. “He has never been this happy,” his mom says. We won’t stop showing up for children like him. Because when people come together to affirm the worth of every child, joy follows.
